•2010/02/07 • Leave a CommentI was listening to CBC Radio 3 tonight, and forgot how much I missed it. Here’s a song I heard that I really liked! It’s the revenge of Johnny Laundry!!!!

•2010/02/05 • Leave a CommentHere are the two latest Pearls Before Swine comics. (See link in the blogroll.) As you may know from reading some of my other posts, specifically This One, you will know that I don’t like the Beatles all that much. And most of you out there are probably like Goat, thinking the Beatles are all high and mighty. Well, I digress. A lot of their music is general nonsense in my opinion. And before you go on this tirade about how popular music these days is the same and is all because of the Beatles and how this one song actually means something about something, stop. I don’t really care. I don’t like the Beatles, I’m not saying you should too. Anywho, enjoy the comics.

Iraq—Some 160 miles northeast of Baghdad, in a Sulaymaniyah music hall ravaged by war, looting, and neglect, a violin-playing boy sounds a note of hope. His teacher, Azad Maaruf, lives there, instructing scores of students.
Our PM, the goon.
•2010/02/04 • Leave a CommentI think Stephen Harper would probably do a better job as a goon for the Calgary Flames than as Prime Minister. I don’t really understand how the guy has anything to complain about. He basically just took leave from his job for 2 months so he can hang out and watch hockey. It’s just stupid.
PM prefers NHL to Parliament – The Globe and Mail.
Stephen Harper says he’d rather be playing hockey in the NHL than playing politics in the House of Commons.
“It’s probably terrible to say but any Canadian boy, if he could play in the NHL, would play in the NHL,” Mr. Harper said in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Michael Farber.
In a piece setting up the Vancouver Olympics, Mr. Farber had asked Mr. Harper if, given a choice, he would rather be serving as prime minister or playing professional hockey.
A fan and student of the game (and of U.S. media interviews), Mr. Harper is writing – and has been for years now – a book on the history of hockey in Canada. Not surprisingly he had some interesting insights about it and how it complements the Canadian psyche.
“Hockey is a fast, aggressive, tough sport and that’s an important part of the Canadian psychology and history,” he said. “It’s sometimes forgotten because Canadians are thought of as peace-loving and fair-minded and pleasant – which I think we are – but that’s not inconsistent with tough and aggressive and ambitious, which I think is also part of the national character.”
He also noted that he was recently “chatting” with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about the game, noting that they come from the two coldest countries on Earth and “not by coincidence, the two best hockey countries.”
A few things from this week…
•2010/02/03 • 2 CommentsAs I get ready for school this morning, I feel like I should mention a few things that have happened to me this week that have been quite out of the ordinary.
Two days ago, as in February 1st, I got 150 hits to my blog. Which is an all time record. The not so cool part was that 90% of these hits were from people searching John Krasinski, better known as Jim from the Office. I had posted something about him getting married a couple months back and apparently people wanted to read about it? Or see his picture? I don’t know.

John Krasinski again, also, I really like his cardigan
Another thing that’s been really random and really annoying, is that I lost my left shoe. Just one. I went out on Friday night with Girlfriend, and when I had come back my roommates had moved in a bar and my shoe was gone. I have no idea where it would have gone or why it would have disappeared. I’ve asked all the roommates, and all the roommates girlfriends and they have no ideas either. Something is aloof in Victoria.
Life in the house is kinda tense right now. It’s pretty weird. With my one roommate working full-time, he really misses out on a lot that goes on with the 3 of us. It’s really become the 3 of us and then him. It doesn’t help that he generally shuts himself in his room when he is home. I feel bad because we haven’t really done a very good job of being nice to him. Things are generally his fault (even if they’re really not, he has become the scapegoat) and it’s just not fair. I feel like there’s nothing I can really do to change anything as it’s just a personality clash and if he chooses to segregate himself from the rest of us, then that’s his choice and I’m not going to influence it.

With my birthday and valentine’s day coming up, Girlfriend and I are trying to plan a trip again. Last year at this time we went to Seattle and it was one of the best vacations I’ve ever been on. We want to do that again, but are having troubles making plans. I would really love to go to Vancouver, but with the Olympics this year, that’s just not an option. I wouldn’t mind going to Seattle again, but I’m not sure if it would be as fun as last time. We’ve been looking @ B&B’s up island, but nothing looks perfect just yet. Any suggestions?
Also, you may or may not remember that I was having a terrible semester a few months ago, and I had looked into transferring to the Digital Audio Arts program at the University of Lethbridge. Well, that’s definitely out. I got my first reply from them this week. When I had first inquired in November. That’s almost 4 months of waiting for an answer. And if their faculty there takes that long to answer a question, then it’s definitely not worth getting involved with the school. So yeah!
Anywho, I best be off to class. Music Theory ahoy!
Later days,
- J

Hey Ya
•2010/02/01 • Leave a CommentSo as I said, I am going to review this Grammy winning CD, Potato Hole, by Booker T. Jones. Here’s a little sample of things to come. He covered Outkast’s “Hey Ya.” Enjoy! Again, don’t mind the video, just listen!
Grammy Results
•2010/02/01 • 1 CommentHere’s a list of the major winners from the Grammy Awards last night, stolen from the GlobeandMail.
- Album of the Year: Fearless, Taylor Swift
- Song of the Year: Single Ladies (Put A Ring On it), Beyonce Knowles
- Record of the Year: Use Somebody, Kings of Leon
- New Artist: Zac Brown Band
- Pop Vocal Album: The E.N.D., The Black Eyed Peas
- Female Pop Vocal Performance: Halo, Beyonce Knowles
- Male Pop Vocal Performance: Make It Mine, Jason Mraz
- Rock Album: 21st Century Breakdown, Green Day – This is a terrible album that should not have won. Stupid Greenday.
- Rock Song: Use Somebody, Kings of Leon – This is pretty impressive considering they were up against the likes of U2, Coldplay and Greenday.
- R&B Album: BLACKsummers’night, Maxwell
- R&B Song: Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), Beyonce Knowles
- Rap Album: Relapse, Eminem
- Rap Song: Run This Town, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West – This is tough because Girlfriend and I are having an argument over who is better, Jay-Z or Eminem. I’m on Jay-Z’s side. They both won two Grammy’s last night.
- Best Rap/Sung Collaboration: Run This Town, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West
- Country Album: Fearless, Taylor Swift
- Female Country Vocal Performance: White Horse, Taylor Swift
- Male Country Vocal Performance: Sweet Thing, Keith Urban,
- Latin Pop Album: Sin Frenos, La Quinta Estacion
- Contemporary Jazz Album: 75, Joe Zawinul&The Zawinul Syndicate
- Dance Recording: Poker Face, Lady Gaga - Lady Gaga wins two Grammy’s as well. Interesting
- Electronic Dance Album: The Fame, Lady Gaga
- Alternative Music Album: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix – I am so glad to see this album one. I’ve been listening to it over the past couple of weeks and it is fantastic.
- Classical Album: Mahler: Symphony No. 8; Adagio from Symphony No. 10
- Traditional Gospel Album: Oh Happy Day, various artists
- Spoken Word Album: Always Looking Up, Michael J. Fox - WHAT?! Michael J. Fox spoken word? Weird.
- Comedy Album: A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! Stephen Colbert
The rest of the winners are kind of expected. The nominee’s weren’t that strong in every category. It’s weird that the Grammy’s accepts music put out from October 2008 – August 2009. Such old music.
One album that isn’t mentioned on that list is Booker T. Jones “Potato Hole”, I have this CD to review and will probably try and get that done sometime in the coming week.
As usual Lady Gaga was wearing ridiculously crazy outfits with plenty of ‘costume’ changes. She even got to play with Elton John as the opening number. That would be a pretty amazing experience. I think Lady Gaga and Elton John should get married. They’d have some interesting kids. Too bad he’s gay. I mean, check out the earrings on this guy.

I didn’t watch the show on TV at all, but I did happen to catch Greenday’s performance of 21 Guns which I thought was particularly terrible. I miss old Greenday. Taylor Swift won 4 awards. Too bad Kayne didn’t come ruin her speech this time. I heard he just finished his community service.
Check it twice…
